Welcome, Everyone

First I want to thank Paul Gross for asking me to be a part of this forum. I'm flattered, to say the least. If I have any expertise in magic, it is probably the ability to assume a complete an honest layman's perspective when it comes to close-up magic. I've done it for a living now for nearly 35 years and it is the selection of material that has kept me well (too well!) fed. But, we can talk about anything here.

I have advised Paul I am a better responder than initiator, so questions are welcome. Most magicians probably don't remember that way back when an enthusiastic young upstart, Adam Fleischer, started a magazine called The Magic Magazine, I was the first product reviewer, so I have a little expertise along those lines. A few guys remember the "Is This Psychic?" fiasco which my review pretty much ended. It was the AGL of the 70's. If I don't have experience with the item, I will just tell you so, but rest assured that my opinion of an item will never be based on the popularity of the inventor/seller nor on any acquaintance I may have with anyone. If I like it, I'll tell you. If I think it sucks, I'll tell you. Then YOU can make up your own mind.

Many people find my ads on eBay to be interesting reading, so if you want specific advise on writing an ad, I can try to help. Anything in the vein of magic is welcome here.

I'll conclude my little introduction with a story that illustrates my idea of a layman's perspective as I alluded to earlier. Many years ago, I did a lecture tour and met a young up and coming magician who is, in fact, somewhat of a superstar in magic today. After the lecture we all went to a restaurant and someone asked the young man to perform Kennedy's Floating Bill, which was creating a sensation among magicians at the time. So, the performer stood up and did it and did it extremely well. I was sitting at the end of a long table, while he was in the middle. Right behind me was a booth in which sat a young couple. I overheard the girl tell her boyfriend, with great excitement, to "...look over there! Look at what that guy's doing?" She, of course, was talking about the performance of the Floating Bill. The young man looked over, looked back at her and shrugged his shoulders and said, "So what? It's just a thread." THAT is how laymen think.

Welcome everyone.

Hello John,
we met many years ago and I doubt you will remember but I just wanted to add to what Paul said above and say that as close up Magician I am delighted that you will be here from time to time.
And so best wishes from all of us Magi in the UK.

Hey John,
Glad to see you here! I started following your routines back with "Live from London" and have enjoyed your creations all the way up to "My Best".

I really like the reviews you've done (in various sources). It would be great to see them regularly on this site. It's hard to find a good, no-nonsense review that isn't biased by relation/employment/etc. Keep them coming.

Rick
